Why Goji Air?
Dr Cathy Jim reveals why Goji is an air purifier like no other The science that makes Goji Air purifiers so exciting is, to non-scientific folk, a bit baffling in the language of the laboratory. Fortunately, Dr Cathy Jim is on hand to translate the details of this game-changing technology into layman’s terms.
Explaining that it is the Nano-Confined Catalytic Oxidation (NCCO) reactor (catalytic converter) that sets Goji Air apart from its competitors, Dr Cathy recalls how she joined scientists at the University of Hong Kong of Science and Technology at a point when the technology was newly developed. Alongside studying for her PHD in Chemistry, Dr Cathy was able to work on the NCCO programme of modification and testing, and also the extended experimental stages of applying it to air purification systems. What, I ask, had been the problem with air purifiers previously – and what has NCCO brought to the party? “More than 90% of filter products use activated carbon or charcoal, but this is just an absorbent; it gathers contaminated particles and odours like a sponge,” Dr Cathy tells me, going on to explain how, historically, this has ultimately created a vicious circle in terms of pollution: firstly, discarding the spent filter into landfill means that its fetid contents are returned into the earth. The toxins are then released back into the atmosphere, concluding their journey by entering our lungs. “It just transfers the pollutants from one place to another and so ends up in the land when you discard it,” confirms Dr Cathy, “but NCCO breaks pollutants down. It converts the carcinogenic waste and bad stuff into water and carbon dioxide, which are not toxic effect.” And that’s not all. In addition to its eco-friendly credentials, Goji’s system is also cost effective. “There are many air purifiers, but Goji Air lowers your cost over the years because of the reactor life, which we recommend changing every twelve years. Because it is not an energy intensive system we can guarantee you a sustainable and continuous performance.” And with Covid-19 making us all much more aware of the importance of clean air, does the Dr Cathy see air purifiers becoming commonplace in the future? “Yes. Because air quality is honestly not as good as it was a decade ago – we can no longer guarantee the air quality, especially in cities.” Certainly the statistics for air pollution make for worrying reading, with The World Health Organisation and the UK Government recognising it as the largest environmental health risk the human race now faces. “Air purifiers are now essential for good health,” Dr Cathy agrees, adding: “I have a Goji at home and we have many at the University.” So there you have it.
